Old Friends

Good Morning Mrs. Kroulik,

It was truly suprising and enjoyable to run into you over the weekend. Life moves so quickly and things change so rapidly that those fond and innocent memories from High School seem like a lifetime ago. Honesty, I haven't reminisced about them with anyone since graduation. I hope things work out so that I might see you and many other people at the reunion this summer. Thanks for reopening pleasant recollections that brought a smile to my face for the remainder of the weekend.

Your old friend (not too old!),

David

A chat with Mrs. Kroulik...

Hello! Thank you for logging onto our class web-site! I'd like to take a few minutes to tell you a bit about myself. I've been teaching first grade at Las Brisas since 2002. I enjoy reading, scrapbooking, coffee and being a mom. Our family also collects Studebakers and can be found at car shows and other "greasy" events. We have a chocolate lab named Kona at home and have added a sweet and active German short-haired named Apollo. I hope that each child leaves my classroom with the wonder and desire to love learning.

I am looking forward to having a fantastic 2008-2009 school year!

Mrs. Kroulik's Fabulous First Grade

First grade will provide many opportunities for your student to learn and grow. The most important thing you can do for your child is to read to or with him/her nightly. Here are some other ideas to keep in mind when faced with questions about what you can do to assist your child's learning.

1. Make something! Anything that they can do on their own. Two lessons learned here are to entertain themselves and make sure that they know how to clean up the mess! Praise your child's efforts to do something original. Do not clean up their mess!

2. Make dinner/breakfast together. Help your child follow a simple recipe. Plan and shop for food together. This will help in reading and math areas.

3. Turn off the computer/T.V./and video games. Make a sign and hang it on the equiptment: "Gone to Hawaii" as a reminder. It will be tough at first but hang in there! It will be like going through withdrawl. When forced, my kids will eventually start to play games and find things that they have forgotten about. (Favorite toys, using their imagination, creating things.)

4. E-mail/write letters. Have your child select a working parent, grandparent, cousin or other contact to connect with. Email and have your child respond back. This will help with spelling, communication and grammer.

5. Keep a list of specific ideas and events that have happened over the summer for writing prompts in the Fall. This will help writers at all levels!

6. Lists! Write...write...write any way they can!

7. READ! Read cereal boxes, maps, directions. Look for sight words while waiting in the doctor's office.
